BLEPHAROPLASTY OVERVIEW

Are your eyelids in need of a lift? The aging process is especially tough on our skin because it can affect every area of the face, including the thin skin of the eyelids. As we grow older, our eyelids stretch, muscles weaken and fat accumulates around the eyes to cause “bags” to form. As a result, our eyes appear puffy, saggy or tired. Thankfully, blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can enhance your eyelid contour and restore youth to the area around your eyes.*

This procedure is performed for cosmetic reasons or to improve your sight by lifting droopy eyelids out of your field of vision. This procedure is effective for patients who want to remove eye bags, correct dark circles around their eyes, get rid of wrinkly eyelids with sagging skin and/or hooded, hanging upper eyelids.

Visit our clinic in San Francisco or seek an appointment at (415) 409-9760 with our plastic surgeon to determine the best line of treatment. You can fill out the online contact us form to hear back from us.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

Before your procedure, you will meet with Dr. Judge for a consultation. During this initial consultation, Dr. Judge will discuss your options and alternatives in great detail. She will also provide you with all of the information you need to make an informed decision about the eyelid surgery procedure. The site of the incisions will also be discussed prior to your surgery. The incisions are typically made in inconspicuous places, such as below your lash line, within the inside of the lower eyelid, and along the natural crease of your upper lids. As a result, your excess fat is repositioned and excess skin can be removed, restoring your appearance from years past.*

Prior to Blepharoplasty ( or eyelids surgery) in San Francisco, you will be scheduled for a pre-op appointment one to two weeks before the actual operation. During this appointment, you will be given instructions for your surgery, as well as any medical request forms for the necessary blood work or related medical tests.

THE PROCEDURE

Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed at our practice in San Francisco or at an outpatient surgery center. You will be given a general or local anesthetic and the length of the surgery is typically one to two hours. During the procedure, an incision will be made along the natural crease of your upper eyelids and inside the lower eyelid as well as below the lash line of your lower lids (transconjunctival and skin pinch lower blepharoplasty). Dr. Judge will redistribute any excess fat, lift the tissues around your eyes and trim excess skin for a youthful appearance.

Some of our patients choose to combine their Blepharoplasty with a face/neck lift, Botox treatments, chin liposuction, brow/forehead lift, and dermal fillers to fully enhance their results.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE

After your surgery, you will be encouraged to walk around that same day. This will prevent possible blood clots. Patients who undergo upper and lower Blepharoplasty can typically return to work within 7-10 days.* The majority of bruising and swelling will usually fade after 7 days. *You should avoid strenuous physical activity during the first four weeks as well.

Scars from eyelid surgery incisions will begin to fade after a few months but cosmetics can be used to minimize the effects of bruising. Dr. Judge will schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss your recovery and progress.

*Individual results may vary. Not a guarantee.
